Greetings.
Thanks for visiting this cruise ship/motorcycle BLOG.
Here are a couple of questions I'd like your feedback on. They both involve riverboats!
When I first thought of cruising and riding, I thought of the "high seas" but what about the Mississippi or the Rhine?

1) Would a 7-day cruise up or down the Mississippi interest you? We could bunk on a riverboat each night and ride the roads along and around the river by day. I crossed the Mississippi last summer from Wisconsin to South Dakota and remember that for at least a half an hour the roads were great leading away from the river. Would there be good motorcycle roads further south?

2) Would a 7-day Rhine cruise with day rides interest you? I did a Rhine cruise a couple of decades ago and the scenery was spectacular. I'm going to assume that roads around the river would be just as interesting. Again, we could bunk on the riverboat at night and ride by day.

Great Idea, I think you can get better scenery in land and around the rivers are where some of the most beautiful towns are, you are not so likely to suffer bad sailing conditions that would hold you up, and the salt air on the chrome is not good, I know living on the little Island of Jersey UK, what happens if you are sailing at sea and hit a storm, the river shouldn’t be affected in the same way.

The Mississippi has always been a river I wanted to float down and having my bike with me would be frosting on the cake. There are many places along the river that are interesting. I think it's a much better idea than Europe.

One of the big rivers in the USA would be great, as you could ride out from the rivers everyday. Roads, rules, and everything about riding would be easier.

Mississippi would be great. There are all sorts of side trips to be taken and then spending the nights on the river with all the barges and trafic, whew what a trip

Both rivers would be great. The Mississippi would probably be more accessible and more affordable to many bikers. The Rhine would also have some stunning scenery -- but the logistics would be much more difficult. I'd start with the one in the US

I think that both suggestions are as good as each other. Coming from the UK if you did the Mississippi then I'd want more than a week to make taking my bike out there, probably the same goes for any Yanks coming to Europe. The final choice will really depend on where you live.
There are other options to consider, the Danube, the French and/or European Canal network, the Baltic Sea, the Adriatic (Croatia, Italy Slovenia etc , apparently very nice and cheap and undiscovered) the Aegean (lots of lovely Greek Island and lots of boats for hire I believe) and maybe even the Black Sea!

A cruise along the Rhine would interest me more than a cruise down the Mississippi. There are also a couple River baots that opperate on the Culombia River.
I have worked on a couple of these boats. You will have to have a support vehicle to move the bikes as there is no room for storing bikes on board.

I like the idea if a cruise down the Mississippi. The only logistical problem is where to put your bike on the riverboat? I don't know if they are equipped to handle m/c's. The Rhine sounds great too, but I would do the US first and then think about overseas. There must be many rivers in Europe that would be interesting, too. Also, how about the Volga river in Russia or the Yellow river in China?

I love the idea but would only be interested in the Mississippi River trip. I have crossed it a few times on a bike and each time its great. I am sure you can never run out of great roads along that great river

Great Idea. Some of the best riding is along the Mississippi.
Lets keep the tourist dollars at home in the USA.

Reading all the about, I can see all the Yanks will not travel out of the USA, what is it with you lot, take a look at the rest of the world, and dont belive all you are told on the TV news, many rivers need thinking about all over the world, I think you may have hit on real good idea here Dary, get it going, were waiting now.

Both sound terrific.

Euro version (Rhine) would cost $$$ in view of Euro to dollar exchange rate + moto rental.

The Rhine sounds like a winner.Rental of multipurpose bikes would be my choice.Touring the wine regions might require some offroading to really appreciate the area.If a spouse or friend comes along ,then the option to ride along or to travel down or up river on the boat to meet later seems a good idea.Keep as many options open as possilble.

Absolutely fantastic idea re the river boat cruising. Can you imagine being able to see amazing scenery while on your bike during the day and then sitting back and listening to a blues or jazz group at night. Watch out Mark Twain, where do I sign up?? And Europe would be the cat's meow to me and my spouse. Have done the Rhine cruise while stationed in Germany and as I remember, it was wonderful but after a while one castle got to look like another from the deck of the boat. But if it was combined with road trips , it would bring a whole new perspective to the trip and be most enjoyable to do again. And the wine and snitzel were quite yummy. And the Baltic, etc., sound like grand adventures. When does the planning begin??
